Arch Gallery is honored to announce its participation in the exhibition project "Echoes of Time" organized by Larry’s List, and will launch artist Pocono Zhao Yu's solo exhibition "Messenger of the Sun: Between Bone and Language" on November 11, featuring the series Jade Armor and The Newcomer, The Messenger, which take the cross‑cultural travelers Faxian and Odysseus as symbolic archetypes to conduct an in‑depth archaeology of the "body" and "language," all hosted within the historic century‑old Guang’er Warehouse along the Suzhou Creek, where the space’s timeless character enriches the new narrative with a trans‑temporal depth, allowing time to resonate within.
Monk Faxian from the Eastern Jin Dynasty undertook a seventeen-year journey westward to obtain scriptures, embodying the spirit of "sacrificing oneself for the Dharma." He crossed deserts and oceans to fulfill his quest for faith. The epic of the Greek hero Odysseus, who spent a decade voyaging home, facing tests of monsters and temptations, represents the Western ideal of "establishing one's destiny through wisdom."
Continuing her exploration of the evolution of Eastern and Western cultures as her research background, in the project Sun’s Messenger: Between Bone and Script, Pocono Zhao Yu uses the symbolic prototypes of Faxian and Odysseus, two civilization-spanning voyagers, to conduct an archaeological study of the "body" and "language." In her works, the body is seen as the relic of civilization, and language as the fossil of memory; the two complement each other over time as bone and script, forming the invisible framework of human culture. "Bone" signifies the physical journey, the quest for truth and self-discovery; "script" represents the spiritual transmission, a pilgrimage transcending geography and ideology. Zhao Yu reconstructs this "drifting of civilization" through cross-temporal dialogue and narration, unearthing signals buried in time, between light and dust, between faith and armor.
Sun’s Messenger is their shared incarnation, bearing light from the past and future, traversing the strata of human memory, and rekindling the dormant language and bones.
