

ARCH PROJECT is pleased to present the solo exhibition Signal Drift by artist Dai Shengjie. The exhibition continues her long-term focus on the "media afterlife" within the global industrialization process—electronic components rendered obsolete by technological iteration, media carriers that have lost their functionality, and residual materials left behind by industrial production are transformed into "technological fossils" in her practice. Drawing on personal experiences of migration and emotional memory, along with field research into distribution hubs for discarded materials, the artist uses materials as narrative entry points to trace the circulation and life trajectories of matter.
Signal Drift is a poetic archaeology of the fragments of electronic civilization, as well as a meditation on the fate of time, matter, and information. Those once-minute yet critical components of electronic devices, which carried dense data flows and memories of human–machine interaction, are now quietly sealed within transparent mediums or gently suspended in air, like silent signals drifting along the boundary between nature and artifice. Through this, the artist constructs a visual ecology that is both biomimetic and futuristic, inviting viewers to reconsider the relationships among matter, technology, and time through contemplative gaze.The concept of "Signal Drift" stems from the artist’s long-term observation and practice along an archaeological path, examining the historical forms, persistence, rupture, and re‑emergence of electronic devices after obsolescence. In the waves of technological iteration, once devices such as smartwatches and mobile phones become "outdated," their internal chips, sensor wires, and other components detach from their original functional systems, falling from "core components of life" to "indigestible electronic waste." These tiny technological organs once bore dense data flows—users’ records, traces of communication, moments of human–machine interaction—yet now drift like signals that have lost their link, adrift in time and space, belonging nowhere and gradually forgotten by mainstream narratives.The artist’s fieldwork reveals another reality: these "fragments" are not merely "useless." In Guiyu Town in the Chaoshan region, locals extract precious metals from such electronic waste through methods like "acid washing" and "dismantling," transforming "industrial residues" into survival resources. In Guangzhou’s Chentian Auto Parts Market, sensors and engine components from scrapped vehicles are re‑sorted and circulated, entering new life scenarios. So‑called "value" is not an inherent property of matter but is instead conferred by labor, environment, and social relations. More importantly, these fragments carry clear historical imprints—they record the technical structures of early smart devices and reflect the everyday practices of specific eras, becoming indispensable material evidence for interpreting electronic civilization.In Signal Drift, the artist proposes examining these discarded technological relics through the lens of "deep time." "Deep time," originating from media archaeology, emphasizes breaking away from the linear logic of present‑day progressivism, instead tracing the circulation and shifting meanings of matter across long historical and ecological cycles, recalling forgotten media as "fossils of electronic civilization." Through preservation and recombination rather than excessive transformation, the artist allows the materials themselves to become the subjects of narrative: transparent media reveal the microscopic textures of electronic components; the simplicity of natural stone forms a tension with the precision of electronic parts; the reflections of old optical discs sway gently with air currents, as if technological fragments are still breathing. Thus, "waste" is no longer merely the endpoint of industrial production but actively participates in the generation of meaning through its materiality.This line of thought also sketches a material microcosm of global industrial division. The ecology and labor costs of waste disposal are often invisibly shifted from the "center" to the "periphery." Technological centers enjoy the dividends of innovation and consumption, yet transfer environmental costs and labor risks to regions with relatively weaker voices. In the material trajectories of these fragments, we see not only "waste" but also the asymmetries of global power and resource distribution, along with the ecological debts latent behind electronic civilization. Technology is not a linear progression but rather a continuous movement of folding back, sedimentation, and dissipation. Like silent signals floating through time and space, these "technological fossils" call upon us to re‑understand the ways of memory, the ownership of value, and the relationship between humans and the world.
